It was bound to happen sooner or later: pretty much everything known by Mahler put into one box (16 cd's). Of course, one could argue endlessly about what performances of the various symphonies EMI could have/should have chosen. But what this set has going for it are a series of outstanding renditions of the various song cycles and vocal works. In addition to having the Thomas Hampson/Wolfram Rieger (piano) "Five Ruckert Songs", disc 16 gives us a survey of numerous "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" performances - possibly THE most gorgeous orchestral song ever composed - captured by EMI over the years. That list includes Janet Baker, Christa Ludwig (twice), D. Fischer-Dieskau, Thomas Allen, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Katarina Karneus. But rather than yack on and on, I'll simply leave you a list of what this box contains.

If I could buy one of these cd's for everyone I know I would do it. The three Priests have created the most beautiful Christmas album I have purchased in years. This is the way these songs were meant to be sung and the orchestrations are absolutely magnificent. If you love all the old familiar carols then you need to buy this one.

Handel: Mezzo-Soprano Opera Arias / Max Emanuel Cencic (2010)

This is a cracking disc of Handel opera arias from the Croatian-born counter-tenor Max Emanuel Cencic. Totally captivating from beginning to end, it includes famous and not-so-well known arias originally written for both male and female singers.

Other than their sheer beauty and technical demands, there seems to be no common connection between the arias selected - although they do extend across Handel’s operatic career, from Agrippina (Venice, 1709) to Imeneo (London, 1740). Listeners hoping for some sense of dramatic place within the operas will be disappointed. There are no introductory recitatives or ensemble pieces. But that is no great matter. What we have, instead, are - as the ex-Vienna choir boy explains in the introduction to the sleeve-notes - a box of brilliant operatic jewels.

Most of the arias were written specifically for male castrati, including the celebrated Senesino and Giovanni Carestini. But there are several, too, composed for female singers, such as the long-serving Margherita Durastanti. Consequently, the recording features vocal showcases at different registers. Cencic excels most in the lower range, bringing strength and force to arias such as ‘Benchй mi sprezzi’ from Tamerlano (track 4) and the simple but affecting ‘Verdi allori’ from Orlando (track 11). But his upper register dexterity is also on show in the racy ‘Come nube, che fugge del vento’ from Agrippina (track 9). Here, he is ably supported by the sinewy strings of I Barocchisti, which, give an insight into Nero’s scheming, duplicitous character.

Both Cencic and conductor Diego Fasolis have opted for quicker than average tempos in several of the arias - in ‘Benchй mi sprezzi’ and ‘Pena tirana’ from Amadigi di Gaula (track 6), for example. This can downplay the intensity of the music, but is wholly appropriate in the more spirited arias, such as the opening ‘Sorge nell’ alma mia’ from Imeneo (track 1), in which the orchestra also goes hell for leather with jabbing strings and fistfuls of harpsichord notes. Indeed, I Barocchisti come into their own several times, notably in the tender ‘Pena tiranna’ and ‘Qual leon che fere irato’ from Arianna in Creta (track 7), which includes some fantastic horn flourishes. Excellent contributions, too, from the chorus of Swiss Italian radio in the two excerpts from Handel’s pastoral serenata Parnasso in Festa (tracks 8 and 12).

A very different set than Teldec's Bach 2000. The Hanssler Bachakademie, supervised by Helmut Rilling, is not HIP (historic instruments performance). The orchestras are warm and lush (but not huge).

"The soloists are, in general, extraordinary. The tempos are sane. Hanssler has included fragments of some incomplete BWV's that are not included in the Teldec set; a minor plus but appealing. I found I preferred these traditional instruments and the daring using of forte-piano in place of harpsichord on a few of the recordings (flute sonatas).

Highlights for me are The Well-Tempered Clavier Books 1 and 2, Musical Offering, Flute Sonatas, The Motets. I also found I prefer these Cantatas recordings to any other, including the new Koopman, Suzuki and the well-known Leonhart-Harnoncourt. While not the newest recordings, the sound is warmer which I prefer to the new state-of-the-art HIP recordings. Although most of the Cantatas are older recordings, much of the Hanssler Bachakademie edition is newly recorded for this project and the sound is consistent and excellent."
